Join Outward Bound on Mount Rainier. At 14,410’, Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States, and one of the country’s most renowned mountaineering objectives. You’ll learn how to use an ice ax, travel on a rope team, climb steep snow, rescue a fallen climber from a crevasse, and achieve as a team.  Long days and significant elevation gain make this one of the most physically demanding that Outward Bound offers. Each student must possess excellent fitness, self-care, and team ethic. Prior mountaineering experience is not required, though experienced climbers are welcome.

Course Description

In six days, you’ll learn all the technical skills necessary to climb Mt. Rainier. You’ll meet in Seattle, WA, and drive with your crew to Mt. Rainier National Park to make camp and prepare for the expedition. You and your expedition crew will meld into a cooperative unit as you formulate a climbing plan, learn how to pack food and gear for accessibility and balance while climbing, and journey upwards through lush forest and onto the Emmons glacier. Here, in perhaps nature’s most scenic classroom, you’ll learn the climbing techniques, rescue skills, and teamwork that will take you to the top.

This is an Outward Bound course, not a guided climb. Six days allows for significant skills instruction and mentorship from our expert, experienced instructors. This course requires active, full participation and commitment from everyone involved. Mountaineering is hard work; arrive physically fit. You are crew, not passengers! This Outward Bound course is not a guided climb—it will require active participation, decision-making and commitment from everyone involved.
